Re: transmision
6th gen has a totally different shifter set up (linkage instead of cables) don't think it will work
so you have a d17a2? (vtec motor)
you can use a non-vetc trans (d17a1) for longer gears.
it bolts right in no modifications needed.
I did the opposite with my old car, I put a vtec trans in a non-vtec car because I wanted shorter gears for passing people quicker.

Re: transmision
just leave it alone. it's geared like that for a reason. 3000 rpm is not high or taxing for a honda. we cruise for hours and hours in 6th at 80 mph /4000 rpm. if you could find a trans with lower/diesel gearing, you'll find yourself with a car that need the gas pedal pressed farther due to the increased load and in the case of an automatic, you'll find it needing to downshift more often when you approach a small hill or try to speed up a couple mph. i really really doubt you'd pick up any mpg that would make your swap worthwhile and you will likely see your non highway mpg drop. hondas are geared efficiently as is, smart engineers were thinking when they created your transmission
