Tips when buying a 01 D17A1 manual?

Hello. I found a local 2001 Honda Civic LX Coupe 5-Speed with 124K I'm considering for $3k..

I know this year had a small number of cars with oil leaks, but cant find any other major issues I should be aware of..

Can anyone give me some advise on what I should look out for because at that price, everything should be perfect imo even though Im overlooking the worn tires.

Thanks!

only 124k on an '01? Wow, that's pretty low for a 17 year old car.

Here's a few things to look out for:
1) Maintenance records. It's at about the time the timing belt and water pump would have been replaced. If it hasn't, I'd either do that maintenance item or shell out the $650 a shop would charge for it to be done.

2) Head gaskets are kind of a 50/50 shot on this generation. Just a heads up on that.

3) Inspect the front motor mount and transmission mount. If they're shot, replace them

4) Same goes for the LCA bushings. Particularly the compliance bushing.

5) Squeaky clutch is a minor annoyance with this generation. It's an easy fix, though; pull back the slave cylinder boot, clean and lubricate.

6) Driver's seat rock is a common issue. Easy fix though. There's a DIY guide on the forum lingering about.

There's probably more, thats all I can think of off the top of my head

Thanks xRiCeBoYx.. 50/50 chances on the head gasket? Wow

Iv also read over heating is another issue. I think it was due to the head gasket allowing coolant into the engine.

I'm guessing these problems are because it was the first year of the 7th generation.

My 2002 had some of those issues. Actually, all of 'em. Head gasket, however, was due to a crap turbo tune. Driver's seat rock went away when I installed racing seats (I was gonna do that anyways). Squeaky clutch was an easy fix. LCA bushings went out at like.. 180k miles. Motor mounts probably at 150k, but they were subjected to extreme dry heat when they finally went out, but that's kinda to be expected out of rubber.

She lasted 15 years/205k miles before i waved the white flag

Most of the other things you mentioned are trivial imo. The head gasket, over heating, oil consumption and leaks aren't.. But the owner claims he doesn't add a drop of oil between changes and no drips on the floor. He's a certified honda tech who teach's at a local community college. Bonus

You think 3k is fair considering it will need tires pretty soon?
