Expected Resale Value? '01 EX Coupe w/ Blown Head Gasket
Expected Resale Value? '01 EX Coupe w/ Blown Head Gasket
My 01 Civic EX started overheating randomly so I took it into the dealership and they ran some tests and found hydrocarbons in the coolant indicating a blown head gasket. I was told it's at least $1200 to fix, but it could be more once they take everything apart and they check the engine sleeves for warping.
Someone suggested instead of fixing it, that I get an engine at a local pick & pull for ~$700-$800 and replace the whole thing.
But I was thinking of selling it even before the blown head gasket but I have no idea what the market is so I just wanted to get an idea of how much you guys think I could get for it if I sold it as-is.
Miles: 127k
Color: Silver
Condition: Blown Head Gasket. Otherwise great condition. All maintenance was performed on time and everything is up-to-date.
Location: SF Bay Area

My guess is that you would be better off replacing the head gasket, even if you go ahead and sell the car. If you are honest and tell people about the head gasket the average person will walk away, the people that are willing to buy it as is will probably give you such a low ball offer it would be cheaper to get it fixed. The only way to tell is get an idea of what similar cars are selling for and then see what kind of offers you get for yours.

how is your auto-transmission? if it's having shifting issues then i would get rid of the car b/c that would be the next thing to go and that will run you another $1,200-$3,000 (depending on if you get it rebuilt or you buy a honda factory rebuild from the dealership). what's good about going with the $1,200 repair is that you are guaranteed by the dealer's repair warranty work. if you go grab a random engine , the following month something could happen and you could be screwed again.
shop around to a few dealerships and see if you can get the $1,200 closer to $1,000. maybe even hit up some local engine repair shops and see what they think.
