So while on my way to work down on 160 West, I was trying to pass this car in front of me, I went from 5th to fourth, then fourth to third. When I went for a third to fourth shift, it went into...
second, thinking in went into fourth. Luckily it didn't damage anything severely. It went from 4k to 9k and immediatedly I took it out into neutral. D17a2 miracle. Thank you amazing technology.

technically there's a time delay for any sensor to react and usually the engine runs slightly higher than the rev limiter (1k in some case) before the fuel cut goes in.
However, his case is the engine rev due to misshift, so the engine WILL rev up due to the car momentum, not fuel or throtle.

when upshifting, the limiter holds the engine, but downshifting... all depends on the left foot releasing the clutch or the clutch going before the engine. either is bad.

I am pretty sure that you didnt hit 9k.
On S2000's we have problems cracking our valve retainers on mis shifts. I advise you pull your valve cover and inspect your retainers before one of your valves drop.
Broken retainers have no warning signs.

The rev limiter on my tuned B16a ECU is set at 9800. I have SuperTech titanium valve train kit. I also have an extra set that I am wanting to sell. But anyway, I've had my B16 up to 9k before while racing but there wasn't much point because I could feel the power fall off before that point. I just wanted to see the needle hit 9 lol!

Ended up bein the dreaded Head Gasket.
Not sure if my miss shift caused it but just seemed like a coincidence.
Anyway running good now with only 85000kms
new HG,water pump timing belt thermostat plugs ....1500 later
december, went from 3rd to second while shifting at 6000 rpm
Then about two weeks later i was sitting idling and noticed my heat way up.
Ended up bein the dreaded Head Gasket.
Not sure if my miss shift caused it but just seemed like a coincidence.
Anyway running good now with only 85000kms

Don't really want to revive an old thread but a few weeks back, I taught my friend how to drive stick shift on my Civic. After two hours worth of lessons, we took a trip from LA to San Francisco. I let my friend take us up north and I drove us back. When my friend drove, there was one time when he misshifted from 5th at like 3k? to 2nd. I couldn't tell how high he revved in 2nd bc I was on the passenger seat. But damn, I felt so bad for my car. Never heard her rev that high.
Just wanted to share.

ahh we win some, we lose some. Honestly, so far my car has been doing well. I hope yours is well lol. Some reason though, I think that mis-shift caused my throwout bearing to become noticeably louder.

a couple days ago i was doing about 55 and went to down shift from 5th to 3rd but instead hit first and now i have 2 dead cylinders in my d17a2, the timing belt is brand new and marks still line up no engine noise or nothing it just threw up misfire codes for cylinders one and 2 so i checked compression and there is zero on both cylinders but 3 and 4 have 155psi, any one know what may have happened? i am an experienced tech, i have done my share of heads and timing belts etc, but dont really feel like pulling the head off this thing during the winter if there is a known issue with it thats quicker to fix, i checked the cam also and its not broken, doesnt smoke while it runs, no knocking or ticking noises, just sounds like a lawn mower becasue only 2 cylinders are firing
