How much boost to K20 before having to make serious engine mods?
How much boost to K20 before having to make serious engine mods?
Hi.
I have a Civic Si K20 2003 which I plan to get a basic turbo kit this year. I would like to approximately how much whp and/or boost i can safely get out of the K20 without changing anything that would not be bolt on?
I am adding a ACT clutch (HDG6) and ACT flywheel Prolite Series, and am also in the process of replacing the 3rd & 4th gear synchros. I will also be adding a cat back exhaust, and would like to add a high flow fuel pump, fuel rail, and injectors.
As far as how much whp would like to get out of the car? Well i would to like get 250whp to 300whp.

A cat back exhaust will be insufficient for a turbo'd car, you need header to tip.
250hp could be achieved with a turbo set-up and hondata, but you would be pushing the limits of how hard you can push your motor without building it. If you want a reliable 250-300hp I would suggest you look into a k20a2 head swap and a minor engine buld.

Or you could swap in a K24 and boost it.More power and torque.Running that VTEC-killer setup
Re: How much boost to K20 before having to make serious engine mods?
So how must psi or hp could i run the stock K20 in my Civic Si to, without having to swap engines or changes pistons rods, cams, valves, (internals) etc? Could comfortably run 6-8 psi and still maintain general reliability? Would I really have to do anything to the injectors and/or fuel system?
Honestly the car as is is very quick considering how light it is. If i can break 220 whp on regular gas i think i would be a very happy man.

6-8psi would be relatively safe and I think pushing 200-220hp would be possible without building the internals of the engine. To get to that point you will need hondata and a good dyno tune, upgrading the fuel system is a must as well.
Even a conservative turbo set-up is an expensive endeavor if you want to do it properly and not eventually destroy your engine.

Not sure what kit I'm going to be purchasing. Any recomedations? There are several on eBay which seem to be a lot less expensive than others that I have found online.

The ones on ebay are cheap for a reason, they're complete junk and will like destroy your motor never mind giving you anywhere near the power gains you want.
Bottom line, if you don't have $3k to spend don't try and go turbo.

Trust me,you don't want to get an eBay turbo. Those things are crap and we kill your engine. The kits that won't kill your engine will run you at least $3000.Greddy and HKS are both good turbo brands. They're the more expensive brands, but reliable.

EDIT: just read that you got a k20a3, disregard what i said and go with a turbo or get a different motor for the same price, na with that motor wouldnt be that great unless you get a k20a2 head so youll have real i-vtec.

NA is possible, but it's no less expensive than going turbo and pretty intense.
Pistons; Rods; K20a2 head; stage 2 cams; aftermarket springs, valves and retainers; intake; exhaust; hondata. Thats easily 5k worth of parts to hit 250hp with a very aggressive tune..
