Re: DX model roof lining...
It wont fit because of your sunroof mechanism needs space to exist. You would need to make a custom mold out of your current headliner and then reupholster it, or just cover the gap on your current and reupholster it. From the outside, you'd still have a sunroof of course. If you want to completely remove it, your going to need some body work- basically have to have the entire sunroof (glass + electrical + mechanics) removed, and a panel welded to the opening, finished flat, and painted- then you could use the dx/lx headliners- you might need some minor bracket work, which is something you could do with pliers and a drill, or it might be more involved with sheet metal and a spot welder- or you might not need to mess with the brackets at all.

yeah youre kinda stuck with it. lots of stuff to remove including drain tubes going out in all four corners. and the body work would cost crazy $$

The goal is to replace the roof skin with one from a lower model EM2, in an effort to reduce weight.

You'd have to cut the roof and then weld in a new one... kind of a huge paint in the ***, but if your deticated and have the money why not. But no, it isnt like a bolt on fender- its a cut and weld then paint job. Structural integrity might be comprised doing so, but you can always have a brace welded in to make it even stronger then either roof in its stock form.

I do paint n body for a living, I have done thie same thign in a ford taurus. Basically, if u have time and basic body knowledge its not that hard to do. The hardest part is removing the glass which can be done with piano wire and carefully sawing the glue out, or have it removed professionally. Then youll need to remove the roof strips( black strips along the edges of the roof. Once that is all done, there are a series of spot welds around the entire perimeter of the skin, youll have to drill them all out ( highly recomend a spot weld cutter for this) Then, pell the skin off. Clean the metal with a wire wheel. Put the new skin on, weld all fo the spots and reinstall everything in the reverse order. Its time consuming, but if u have the tools, a weekend would get it done.

Are you talking about messing with just the sunroof spot, or the entire roof?
After spot welding you would need to flatten the buldging welds right, and then make the panel completely smooth and use some kind of body filler and then take it to paint.
