Crank pulley bolt snapped off

Alternator belt broke so took it to get fixed and shortly after my crank pulley bolt snapped off. Not sure if it is junk or what I can do to try to fix or ask for help. I used a drill and broke a few bits but managed to get the broken part of the bolt out. I understand I need to look for damage caused by the woodruff key to some things. And the timing belt shifted out cutting through the cover and starting to shred the belt. Is there any hope? Thanks

Re: Crank pulley bolt snapped off

Tough break. How did you notice the damage? Did your engine suddenly cut off? At te very least you're looking at replacing the parts that got damaged. If the timing slipped and the valves contacted the piston...

Re: Crank pulley bolt snapped off

No still ran. I thought the alt belt was loose and wasn't charging but turned out to be more. The tow driver drove it off the truck. But the timing belt has shifted out slicing through the plastic guard, cutting it and in the process starting to shred the belt. So this shift worries me, maybe because the crank pully worked its way out and the belt followed?

Re: Crank pulley bolt snapped off

Keyway doesn't really look beat to death from what I can tell, and you say the bolt sheared off? Overtightened bolt likely?
I can't see the pulley remains or the timing gear very well, but if the bolt snapped and let the harmonic balancer (pulley) pop out there probably wouldn't be a lot of damage to either part.....as long as it wasn't run long that way.

Probably saveable, replace the damaged parts and don't bend valves while doing the timing belt

Re: Crank pulley bolt snapped off

Timing belt gear looks like it's still aligned correctly, that's important.

If the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) is off a little bit, it won't be a problem unless someone tries to reset distributor timing because the timing marks on the pulley won't be exactly correct.

Cheapest way out would be to get a new bolt and stick the old crank pulley on and see how it goes. Tighten it to specs this time so it doesn't snap off again. (If it doesn't work out as planned, well it needed an engine before you started.)

Most correct way would be to replace the crankshaft and whatever else was damaged, and that's a lot of work and expense.

Re: Crank pulley bolt snapped off

Good point, for cheap fix I also need to replace the timing belt as it started to shred when the harmonic balancer came off, cutting through the plastic cover. I'm gonna get th cheapest timing belt I can find as I'm not sure this will work! I think one sells for 29$ just belt alone.
