Transmission Fix

Alright so for a while my car has been jumping 2nd gear to third. Took it to my mechanic and told me my transmission needed to be fixed. Ive been saving up for quite a while to fix it and I gave the guy a call to find out he raised the price higher then he had originally told me. So I was wondering if maybe it'd be cheaper if I bought the transmission used myself and paid him for labor or if there is any way I could do it?
Thing is though I don't know what kind of transmission Id need so i was wondering if anyone on here could tell me that info along to the questions I posted.
I have 1991 civic lx
Thanks!

Re: Transmission Fix

go to your Honda dealer with the vin number or make and model and ask for the part number of the full transmission... or just call down to one i guess. although i wouldn't buy one from a Honda dealer it's probably very expensive. u might be able if you have the skills to go pull one from a junkyard that would save you a ton of money. i get alot of my parts from u-pull in town. otherwise find a respected transmission dealer on-line. it will most likely save you money because most shops will mark up the price of materials. although i don't think a transmission rebuild will be more expensive than replacing an entire transmission.

Re: Transmission Fix

Yeah the dealership would be alot more then I want to pay. Im looking at rebuilt transmissions online and I found some for about $500 and the dudes will install for an extra fee so Im gonna check them out and see whats up. And I would want to do junkyard tranny and the install myself but Im pretty sure its complicated haha
