fuel pump question PLEASE HELP

i have an 89 civic lx 5 speed and have been having some issues with is and want to make sure thats what it is before i spend the money when i got the car the pump was not getting power so i dropped the tank to see if was the pump and i open it up and there is a wire loose on the pump (i tighten) and hook it up to the battery and worked so i put it all back together and no power to pump again i get a test light and the 4 way connector under backseat was not getting power so i ran a switch and a fuse to pump and has been working fine.

But now sometimes when i turn the pump on it it wont make any sounds till i go under and smack the bottom of the tank and then it will start priming and now sometimes its a nice pump prime sound and othertimes its sounds like a dam mini air compressor and having a rough time getting it started but evertime i have to hit the bottom of tank to get any sound out of it and only the bottom of tank will work to get it to start makin noise. and i have 3 new main relays so i know its not that

Ya sounds like there's some trash in it or its just time to replace it. Older chevy trucks were bad about that too

One more question will it hurt the pump in any way being on a switch as in the life and performance of the pump?

Not sure but if you follow the wire you can fix it. Might be a broken wire that's making no connection or a damn squirrel or mouse chewed the wire. It's not hard if you have a power probe, short finder.
