Power issues/belt noise

Hey,

I know nothing about car engines etc, I thought my battery was going. Then I realized the battery just gets the car started.

The issue i'm having is that when I use my rear defrost, my wipers and my dash lights I lose power. Today just sitting idle with my wipers and rear defrost on nothing else, no stereo my wipers started to slow down, the light of my dash clock went out and when I shut my wipers off it came back. Sometimes when sitting idle and having everything on my car has lost all power and shut off haha.

Also, I am getting noise and it's been happening for awhile now. It's coming from a belt and pully system which i've taken a picture of but at work I can't find a single website to upload photos to so that I can post it here because they're all blocked.

THis is what is giving me the noise and the faster im driving or pressing on the gas the louder it gets. It does get quiter over time, and I dont believe it's the cold I park in a heated garage. Is this the alternator belt? Could I possibly need a new alternator or could replacing the belt solve the issues? I'm not sure if the pulley system is missing bearings etc that might be causing the noise but it's quite loud.

Re: Power issues/belt noise

The arrow is pointing at the power steering belt.

You described an alternator belt slippage/squeal/screech that is the usual result of the belt being too loose. It needs inspected for condition, then either tightened or replaced.

Re: Power issues/belt noise

get your alternator output tested, it takes seconds and shouldn't be at all more than 25 bucks. autozone might do it.

Gotta have a tight belt FIRST.

If the belt slips, the alternator can't charge right.
