3rd Gear (D3) Automatic Transmission

I've looked around and haven't been able to find a clear answer. I was just wondering if driving around city in D3 (automatic) strains or harms Civic engines & transmissions in any way, even if I let off the gas the switch it in D when I reach 50+ and I need the 4th gear. I basically want to know what will happen over time, if there are harmful results of doing this. Thanks.

I tend to do that as a way of keeping myself within the speed limit haha. I see the RPMs climb and remember to slow. Doesn't seem to do any wearing beyond the norm. Of course I would floor the gas when in 3rd if ya do that method though.
