1993 civic relieve fuel pressure?

Is there a less messy way to releive the fuel pressure than loosening the bolt at the fuel filter and letting the fuel run out? Seems I should be able to disable the fuel pump and run it till the fuel has been burned off instead.

TIA

More info: This is a 1993 civic dx hatchback, and the purpose is simply to change the fuel filter.

Pull the fuel pump fuse, turn the car on and let it run out of fuel.

That's how you're "supposed" to do it but, nobody does.
