1994 Civic frusteration!!!

I'm at a loss. I've read every thread here on this issue and can't figure it out. Here's my dilemma....

It seems to only happen when the weather is raining really really hard and the car is really wet. Come to an idle and it starts going up and down then dies. Then I take it under a overhang so it's not getting wet and wait. It starts back up and idles fine for about 30 seconds then the racing of the idle up and down again and kills.

So I tow the car home and let it sit and dry out and it runs fine. Now I have changed the distribultor, rotor, and now the coil And it's happening all over again, but only happensd when it rains really hard? No check engibe light (only when it dies) no light at restart so no code available.

I'm soo frusterated Any help would be appreciated because it won't do it for a mechanic.

I almost want to say it's a sensor shorting out, especially since you said it only happens when it rains hella hard.. As for which sensor.. I got no clue..

Do you still have the front splash guard in place?
I would start pulling every electrical connection that I could find (especially at the bottom of the engine) and fill the connectors with dielectric grease. This will water proof them.
It could take a while to find the culprit. You might try putting a sprinkler under the car first to see if you can duplicate the issue on demand. That will shorten the trouble shooting time frame.

This is the most original, yet strange, idea I have ever seen on this forum.

Stranger than using a leafblower to replicate wind noise? I ran across a TSB that said use one.

Re: 1994 Civic frusteration!!!

Thanks for the ideas so far. Yes I think this is going to be a tough one to find I hate this....it ran just fine today and probably will until there is a hard rain again. I am going to get it over to a mechanic my mechanic recommended because he has more testing equiptment.

But to duplicate it it may be tough and the sprinkler is a good idea, but not sure if I will be able to at a mechanics garage we'll see what he says etc. I've written down a bunch of ideas given here on other (similar issue) threads and hopefully that will help him too??

Yes I still have the splashguard and thought of that too, I just don't get it it's been fine ever since I purchased it with 64k, now I have 124k after 2 years of owning it and now this ugh!

Keep any other ideas coming I need any and all.

Also make sure that your IACV is screwed in tight, and check the O-ring. There is a slight chance that water is getting in there and messing with the idle valve.

I looked under the hood the other day, and noticed that one of the bolts was resting in the socket but almost completey off of the threads, and that was causing my idle to go between high and low RPM's.

Thanks! Will check that out as well. Haven't been able to figure this damn thing out yet:/
