Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
So I've been on the market for a k20a2 complete engine for quite a while now and I had planned on meeting up with a guy in Pennsylvania in 3 weeks to pick up his k20a2. Alot of people have recommended getting a k20/k24 hybrid instead and I just ran by this local listing (http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...942245067.html) for a k20z3 head which does not include the intake manifold and a few other things. Now my question is, if I want to do a k24/k20 hybrid, if I purchase that head with this complete k24a2 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-08...d#ht_500wt_956), will I be able to make a complete engine, k20z3 head with k24a2 block, out of the two?
And here's the car!

And here's the car!

Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
Putting a k20 head on the k24a2 would be useless. The k24a2 is superior to the k20a2 and k20z3 so it wouldont do any good. It would probably make the k24a2 trq go down probably cause the k24a2 head flows alot better than the k20a2. If you want to do the k24/k20 setup then get the k24a1 block and but the k20a2 head on it. If you want to get the k24a1 and put the k24a2 head on it. That would be a better combo. The only thing bout both of those you would have to put the k24a2 cams in to hold up to the head. There is also the k24a1 vtec killer setup that makes alot of power to.
Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
But if the k24a2 head is superior to the k20 head wouldn't the normal k24a2 complete engine be better than all of those combinations?
I'm simply willing to spend close to 3 grand to get the best performing combination I can get, from what I've read k20/k24 combos are the best bet as far as going k-powered goes. It's just figuring out which head and which block will perform the best.
To clear things up though, could you explain the pros and cons for k20z3/a2 vs k24a2?

Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
The k24a2 is the best k series made besides the k20a. The k24a2 is better than the k20a2 and z3 because it is a 2.4l and it has alot more trq. The block in the k24a2 is already built and so is the head. Yes the k24a2 would be the best thing to do over all. But if you dont have that much you can do a cheaper route to make the k24a2 and that is grabbing the k24a1 block and the k24a2 head.
I have seen plenty of dyno results of the k24a2 with just bolt ons and tune and it was up to 240 or more whp and the trq round 220. A k20a2 with bolt ons and a tune will be round 220 whp and round 170 trq. As you can see the k24a2 would bust that k20a2.
If you want to go turbo the k24a1 is the better swap and cheaper. The k24a1 is the best k motor for boost cause its already low compression as it is and all the internals can handle up to 400 or more whp. And 400 whp is very easy with boost in the k24a1. The k24a1 is a very potential motor if you kno what you are doing. The k24a1 vtec killer setup is a great setup with it and then boost is ridiculous. The k24a1 vtec killer puts down 210 whp and round 190 trq. Still with the fact that the k24a1 is a non vtec motor and can be made alot faster than the k20a2 and a hole lot cheaper to.
There are tons of possiblities with the k motors.

Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
I do plan on boosting maybe 1-2 years from now, but as far as getting my car to perform the best in the short run (3-6 months) you would suggest getting the k24a2 then? I feel like I'm getting mixed opinions because people are telling k20a2 but then k24a2 and then k20/k24, I don't really know what to think to be honest. But as far as basic specifications the k24a2 seems to have more hp and torque than everything else so why not just k24a2?
I do see the point in the k24a1 setup but for my current goal its a bit far.
I'm assuming you have decent credibility so if you could, in this situation what would you do? I have about 3 grand to spend and hopefully it can get me somewhere. Not that you're choosing what I'm going to do with my car, I'll just highly consider it and do some research.
Do 'ppreciate the help and information so far!

Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
Well if you wanted to do the k24a2 swap in your car it would cost more than 3k. You can find the k24a2 in some places for 2k but then you got to think bout all the parts to have to swap it in your EJ. There are alot of things you need besides motor/tranni, engine harness. You will need kpro which is like 1k. Then you need a ep3/rsx sub frame, rsx shifter assembly and shifter linkage, motor mounts, axles and a couple other things.
The k24a2 would be the best swap to do but if you do want to go cheaper than the k24a1 would be it. You can find a k24a1 for 600 then you can find a ep3/rsx tranni for like 300 or 400 so 1k for the motor and tranni then kpro for 1k and the rest of the stuff probably for another 1k so it will be bout 3k for the k24a1 swap. The k24a2 would be bout 4k or more.
And most people that really dont know bout k series always say just the k20's when in reality the k24's are superior of the k series motors. The k24/k20 setup is a great setup but not for the k24a2. The rest of the k24's with a k20a2 head would be a great setup.

Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
Oh I'm sorry I should have clarified. I meant 3k for just the engine, as far as ECU, tranny, mounts, etc, that fits into my 7k total budget. So I assume that when people were telling me k24/k20 they were assuming NOT the k24a2 block but some other one like the Accord block?
The 3k budget is what I have set aside in hand right now until I find one to purchase locally. So if you say k24a2 > k20a2/k20z3 then k24a2 it probably is!

Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
Oh ok so you will not have any trouble with costs in swapping in a k series.
And ya basically they are saying either the CRV, Element or Accord block.

So, good deal? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-08...d#ht_500wt_956
Going to shoot him a call and see what it comes with.

Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
It looks good and everything and the seller has at least 98% good feedback so it might be a good deal. Only thing bout it is you will need to get a flywheel cause that is an auto flywheel.
Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
How much do you think that'd run me?
Found this one too, no transmission from what it looks like.

Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
The flywheel just depends on what kind you get. And the other link is for a complete k24a2 with ecu, harness and tranni but the tranni is auto so you will want a manual.
Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
From the looks of it he's parting out the tranny separately. I have a friend selling a 6 speed tranny from his rsx, should be fine with a k24 right? Sorry for the hassle but I can't pass on your great help haha.
Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
Alright cool, I think I'm set. Going to contact these guys on ebay tomorrow when its not the wee hours of the night and hopefully I can have all this by next week. Thanks alot for the help, I'll keep in touch and let you know how things went
Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
So I called the guy from the first link, engine comes like its shown, no alternator, no transmission, no ignition, no ps pump shifter box etc. Its still a good deal from what I'm aware of, I'm getting a 6 speed tranny for 300, how much am I looking at as far as everything else for the swap including mounts and everything to get it to work excluding labor? Ballpark?
Re: Putting a k24/k20 hybrid in this civic!
After you get the motor and tranni. The mounts, sub frame etc etc, will be bout 1000. Then if you dont have k pro that will be another 1000. There are some guys on ephatch selling kpro for 900.
