CEL light and 4k rev limiter

I own a 89 civic dx 1.5L
Yesterday I drove to work and all was fine. when I started it up after 6 hours the check engine light was on and my car had almost no power and the rev limiter was at 4k. i drove around for 10 mins and parked it. after about 10 mins i started it up and it sputtered at first then it ran fine. everything normal, ecept the check engine light. the same thing happened on the way home 6 hours later. after i let it sit for about 10 minutes again it started up sputtered and then ran fine WITHOUT the CEL on and it contunued to run fine for the rest of the day, WITHOUT CEL on. now today i started it up in the mornign and the CEl came on again with the same problem but i cannot get it to "fix itself". now i know i have to get it diagnosed but has onyone else had this problem with an older civic, non v-tec??? All my fluids are topped up and i cant seem to figure out what the heck is going on.

so i took it into the shop and its my tdc sensor as well as a temp sensor that i already knew was broken. looks like im going to invest some money into it for a new distributor.
