cheap beef up
cheap beef up
i have a 1991 civic dx 1.5L i am looking for a way to beef up the engine but fairly cheap. the best i have got in a 1/4 mile is 18.89 with a cold air intake for the only upgrade. i want to be able to atleast hit low 18's if not high 17's
Re: cheap beef up
get a full exhaust, hi flow cat (or take it off and pound it out if u dont have emissions) change to a multi point fuel injection, or even a vtec mini me, port and polish the head and intake manifold, theres tons of things u can do to make it faster, u want 17's? and when u get to 17's ull want 16's then 15's then 14's and so on.... trust me i started there too....
Re: cheap beef up
according to some resaearch you have a d15b2 which has approx. 90 hp at6000rpm even a vtec system wouldnt do much a built b series swap would probably be the best bet in your situation. i myself have a 93 civic ex which is a d16z6. so i could either build mine as it is or drop a b series. hasport.com makes b series mounts for ur ride btw
Re: cheap beef up
He's right. "14's all day long" seems to be a bit of a stretch without a host of other mods - I've been there.
The problem is "expensive" is a relative term - what kind of budget are we talking about here? What kind of skill level? Swapping heads can be a nightmare if all you are used to is changing oil....
My d15 to B16 swap cost me around $1500 back in 2000, and should be considerably less now. Realistically, you need to free up your entrance (which you did with the Intake) and the exit first before you are going to get much out of the old 1.5. A full exhaust is well under $500 for a good one, including the header (no cat), and can be done by the weekend warrior, so Id start there.

Re: cheap beef up
One cheep and effective upgrade to improve your 1/4 mile time is a lightweight flywheel. Try and find an 8 lb. flywheel (stage 1 clutch & 8 lb flywheel kits run about 200 on ebay). This will allow your rpms to drop faster when shifting, letting you get into gear faster. You should also get a short shifter while your at it since you can get one for 15 bucks on ebay. Note: Flywheel installation requires dismantling the transmission and professional installation is recommended.
As far as power, upgrading your exhaust will give you the most bang for your buck. This, however, probably won't help your 1/4 mile time as much as a lightweight flywheel.
Top 3 things to upgrade for quick & fairly cheap performance upgrade:
Intake
- $50
Lightweight Flywheel
- $100-200
Exhaust (at least cat back ... get headers & high flow cat to get a real boost)
- $150 for cat back, $100 for headers, $100 for high flow cat (possibly less)
(Note: Prices given are the cheapest prices I have found through research for my own civic. Best prices most often found on ebay.)
For a more beefy upgrade to your car, you should look into swapping your head w/ a d16z6 head ... Otherwise just drop a b16a2 engine into it.
Be patient w/ your upgrades though, do your research & find what is right. BTW, upgrades add up ... you start w/ 1 or 2 and before you know it, you have made many more mods than you you originally planned.
