Fuel Additive/Honda Civic 2000

Check engine light came on for the first time after distributor, battery, and air filter were replaced. Mechanic suggests it is not liking the fuel additive, to fill the gas tank and keep driving. I took it to a friend's high performance auto shop. Any concerns around fuel additives for this -older- car that I should be aware of, especially while engine light is still on? Thank you

What is the actual code number?
What is this "fuel additive"?
