BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
Cutting straight to the point;
My brother owns a 2000 civic si em1, the car was shutting of when he threw it in neutral, and also felt like it didnt have any power when accelerating.. He found out he was low on oil, so he threw in 3-4 quarts, to get home. On his way, the car shut off while driving and a ton of smoke came out from under the hood. Blown engine. He Got towed home, and we took a look and on the lower part of the engine, beneath the headers, is a hole blown. What part of the engine, is this, and any ideas on how much it would cost to get it running again (rebuild) or is he better of swapping the entire engine?
Sorry I don't have any pics, as its late. Ill try to get a few tomorrow after work or asap.
Thanks.

Got a few pics:

So can the damage to this section be repaired, & for about how much?
Or is the cost not even worth the time and effort?
Thabks again for your help.
Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
That's a fair size hole lol.. I believe the only way to fix that, is to get a different engine. If you get the same engine as you have (probably a D series?) it won't cost you too much to do the swap.
Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
But like I said, its my brothers civic, and unfortunately I don't think he can afford any kind of repairs, unless its literally "low-cost" which I highly doubt, as he works a part time job. I offered to purchase it from him, and pay for the repairs myself, but as of right now, I dont know what will become of this thing. I would like to make a project out of this and make a nice and powerful little car, within a reasonable budget, of course. Any ideas?
Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
Well.. It's an EM1 which is a fantastic base car for a project. You can always get a B16 engine block and install your current head. If your doing the work yourself it isn't going to be all that expensive.
Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
The car did have a check engine light on, a weird noise coming from what i think is the water pump, and I also noticedan oil leak from a plastic plug thats on what I believe to be the head?
I'm not sure how much they want for the car yet (car starts and is for sale as a whole), but its most likely a salvage title, and they'll probably be asking around $1500 for it, since that's usually the price they ask of all their complete cars they have that are running.
What do you guys think?

Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
I bet you can find a correct engine for $500 or less.

Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
Well, personally, my brother has literally no money to repair the engine, he barely has enough to pay the rest of the money he owes on the car.
However, if I take over the payments, I could easily have at least $1200-$1500 within a month, for the repair.

Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
I don't really think you can get a B16 for 500 dollars. Maybe a block. Never heard of a B17A1. I think your thinking of a D17A1 and no, its not a direct fit into your car, not at all. It also makes substantially less power than a B16.
Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
Anyways, an entire engine is rather costly for me at the moment so I'm planning on just buying the block from a B series engine, and replace the damaged pistons as well . Which block would be the best to swap for the blown b16 one?
Is this a decent price for a block;

Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
A 2000 Civic does not have a 1.7 anything. 1.7 wasn't used until 2001 in North America.
Your pic from above shows a B16A2.

Is this not the engine from the car in question?
Re: the ebay link engine, that is a BARE BLOCK. You would still need all of the guts (crank, rods, pistons, oil pump, etc., and a complete head, and timing stuff). It also looks like a "spray n pray" sale. Meaning: they paint it nice and hope it looks good enough to sell.
Now ask yourself....."Why would anyone strip a perfectly good block?"

Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
OP, you need a used B16A2 engine. The connecting rod for the piston is what came around and punched a hole in that block because of serious oil starvation to the entire engine. If you drop that oil pan, it'll be like the tv show Gold Rush Alaska and panning for gold. The whole engine should be considered a paper weight. And if, as you stated, you're not a mechanic and don't even know what the name and function of the engine parts are, how do you expect to do this rebuild yourself?
You need to buy a used B16A2 engine and have a professional mechanic install it for you, plain and simple. And if you can't afford all that then you need to find another means of transportation until you can.

And I dont NEED a b16 engine, although iit would be the easiest way to go, I want toget the most out of the engine performance -wise so I'm weighing my options.

Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
If you try to stuff any of it into a 1.8, there probably won't be ANY that can be used, since it is a completely different engine.
If you repower the car with a different/bigger engine, you will probably need the trans that goes with that engine, and the wiring and computer, axles, shifter, etc. (The complete front half of the donor car is helpful.)
It is amazing how much stuff you will find out you need that you did not consider when you started the project.
Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
^ True. I did a simple 4 lug to 5 lug conversion on my car.. what a nightmare it turned out to be. This works with this but not with this so I can't use it at all but I can use this part if I do this to it... I ended up buying a bunch of extra parts that are now lying around. Oh well... If you are going to go B18 do lots of research on what you need, what will work, what not to bother with, and how much money its going to cost. Then double it, because it WILL double.
The only salvageable part of that engine MAY be the head. If the piston hasn't come in contact with the valves. If it has, you may need to toss the valves. The whole bottom end is trash.

Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
Where have I heard that before, hmmmm?
Look into combustion chamber sizes and compression ratios before you think you want to stick a 1.6 head on a 1.8 block.
The head would need a complete teardown and cleaning if it came off of the trashed engine. The oil passages, galleries, VTEC system if quipped, rocker shafts and arms, EVERYTHING must come apart and be thoroughly cleaned.
It will probably be FULL of metal and bearing debris, hiding and waiting to come out later on and wreak havoc all over your new engine job.
If the debris doesn't come out, then it stays in place and starves cam journals (and other parts) of precious oil lubrication.
BTDT.

Yea ezone.. Your not the first to come to this realization though. I've known this for many years. Since the first time I did ANYTHING to my car lol.

Re: BLOWN ENGINE!! Need Help!
Oh I know it.
I don't have much original material, I got it from somewhere else.
It applies to most other projects I do too, like anything I try to DIY in my house. Every plumbing project requires a dozen trips to the Home Depot/Lowes/Menards, and then I finally get what I really needed at the local mom and pop hardware store LOL
