My engine was swapped, what engine do I have?
My engine was swapped, what engine do I have?
Hello,
The engine in my 96 Honda Civic Si was swapped before I bought it. It has a number written on the top in pink crayon, then "D16A". The rest of the writing is in Japanese. The engine works fine, but I don't know what exactly I have in there. Where can I find the actual proper engine code on the engine itself? It has a black top with "Honda VTEC" written on it. I will post pictures later. The reason I need to know is I live in Canada and want to know what parts are cross compatible with the D16Y8 engine the car originally came with, in the event I need to replace anything. My local parts shops do not carry listings for Japanese engines, only those made here.
I do know it does sound like it has VTEC, as at 5500 RPM you can audibly hear the change in tone from the engine, a deeper, slower sound that I assume is the VTEC kicking in.
Any advice would be welcome, I'll have pictures up a bit later.
Thanks,
Drach

Alright, new to these forums and this brand of car in general. Appreciate the "google it" response but was hoping for something a little more informational.

He's (indirectly) telling you to look at the stamp on the engine. Right in front, look a out a foot below the top radiator hose
edit: Got home and did some googling for you, just to assist you in finding out what engine you have
On the pic below, that's the front (exhaust manifold side) of the Honda D-engine. Doesn't matter which D-engine you have, it's the same place for everyone (as far as I know, at least. Someone, please correct me if there's a deviation from what I consider the "norm"). The ms paint status arrow points to the engine stamp, which should be stamped with D1XXX. A quick wiki-search for "Honda D Engine" should help you figure out the rest, or at least tell you what cars that engine came in.

She's been running.. Just not as well as I'd like her to be.. There's some weird sound I'm gonna investigate this weekend, and she's still burning ~a quart per 1000 miles.. She still gets me 31MPH city though, so I can't really complain
Good to know. lol. Technically I wasn't wrong
