Pizza Delivery and MPG
Pizza Delivery and MPG
Hey I'm new here and have previously owned a 91 Camry (4 banger) and a 90 Camry Wagon (V6) and I deliver pizza.
Now I own a 98 Civic LX w/ Auto Trans and a seized A/C compressor (aside from that and touch of front end damage it is in good shape).
Which means a crap ton of stop and go driving as well as idling.
Any tips to improve MPG? Currently about 19-23 while on the job and about 27-30 straight highway driving (which as you can tell I don't do much of except for a bi-annual trip to visit family up north in MD, USA).
I bought this car from my little sister at 160K miles on 3 JAN 2013 and have now added about 1.5/.6K since. I'm planning on changing the oil in the next 100 miles as the SEVERE schedule calls for a change every 3750 miles.
EDIT: Checked the EPA's website and the new updated MPG numbers are 25/28/33 (city/combined/highway respectively)

Re: Pizza Delivery and MPG
Check your tire pressure, spark plugs and air filter. While delivering I would think that would be like city driving, which means your not to far off from the EPA estimates. Don't get on the gas hard, accelerate slow, coast when you can.
Not related to mpg, do you know if the timing belt was done?

Re: Pizza Delivery and MPG
Driving like grandpa results in loss of shifts at work. The point is to get the food there and get back pronto.
Full tune up is:
Plugs
Wires
Dist Rotor & Cap (If needed)
All filters (Oil, Trans, Air) and Oil & Trans Changes
Anything I'm missing?

Re: Pizza Delivery and MPG
Your MPG isn't terrible but it should be better. I delivered pizzas for years and averaged 30mpg in my '05 Civic 5 speed, all city driving. I did shut the car off when I had to go in the store unless I knew I'd be right back out, no sense in letting it idle for 10 min while you wait for another run. I let it run when I was going up to houses though.
Another thing I would recommend is STP Fuel Injector cleaner. Some say it's not needed but it has worked for me along with a couple drivers I recommended it to back in my pizza days. It's cheap so never hurts to try.
