97 EX Automatic MPG Off?
97 EX Automatic MPG Off?
I have a 97 Civic (170k miles) that seems to be getting weird gas mileage.
It's the 1.6 with the J8 VIN, which I was told is a V-Tec.
The gas light came on - I drove it about 10 miles with the light on, then filled it with 3 gallons of gas.
At about 55 miles, the fuel light came on. I drove it to about 70 miles, then the car shut down from being completely out of fuel.
So with the car bone dry, I put 3 more gallons in. After I put 3 gallons in, the needle barely moved above the first white line.
Is it just me or should I be getting better mileage? Am I just measuring it wrong? I'm thinking I should put a full tank in to measure?
Thanks for any opinions.

What a stupid ****ing forum. Over 100 views and not ONE civic enthusiast knows about this?
Seems like either this board is full of posers...or everything I heard about import kids not knowing **** about cars is true.
Oh well...I'll just fill up the whole tank then track my fuel cost/miles. Just thought someone here might know some info on this for my specific model.
Take care, awesome community.
Maybe I should of asked how I can make my car sound SIKK BRO. Then I would of gotten tons of answers on some sweet exhaust pipes. Hahaha.

Don't know if you'll get this with your post being so old but... 1. Start with a full tank of gas. 2. Mark down the mileage on your odometer. When your tank gets to 1/4 full, fill the gas tank up. 3. Write down how many gallons it took to fill 'er up. 4. Enter the "ending" mileage your car was at when filling up. Do the math.
Car started with a full tank at 150,000 miles. Ran the car until it got to a quarter full. Ending mileage was 150,200. I put in 8 gallons to fill 'er back up. 8 gallons got me 200 miles. (200 miles divided by 8). I got 25 miles per gallon. Or at least approximately. You will then be able to make an educated guess as to whether or not your Civic mpg is behaving within the EPA guideline estimates, or if something is amiss. Good luck.

Re: 97 EX Automatic MPG Off?
Try using the app Milage Tracker, it works on partial fillups to track ~milage. Of course it works better with fill ups, but you have to get a baseline. Milage is a fickle thing. It depends so much on the user, the temperature, both at fillup and during use, the type of driving, highway vs city. With they info you gave there are way to many variables.
Re: 97 EX Automatic MPG Off?
I read somewhere that our Civics sometimes have an issue with the fuel leveler in the gas tank. It may not be that you're getting poor gas mileage, but that the leveler that gauges the fuel level is simply worn. Or, perhaps when you park your car it misreads the amount of gas depending on if you're on a hill or not. I have this problem with my car. I thought it was awesome that I could get another 50 miles after the light came on, but it's not that great considering I've run out of gas twice because of trying to be ballsy about it. As far as a fix of it I wouldn't know where to tell you go besides looking it up yourself. Hell, maybe take your gas tank off and see what's in there
