96 Civic dies after highway stop, no obvious solutions...

Sorry if I'm repeating but after a search I wonder if my problem is unique.

I have a stock 5-speed 1996 Civic LX with 212K on it. After travelling at high speed (Highway) and pulling off to stop the engine will idle down to the point where the RPM gauge is so low it doesn't move and the engine will usually die. Sometimes I can rev the engine and get it to stay up before it settles into its normal idle. I haven't noticed this behavior in city driving, only after getting off the highway. Its started doing this a week ago.

Its been in the high 90's, with high humidity here in South Dakota and the A/C has a hard time keeping up but it seems to be working within factory specs. Its always been on when I the engine dies.

There are approximately 20K miles on the cap, wires and plugs, 20K on O2 sensors, 5K on fuel filter and I looked and spray tested for a vacuum leak so I don't suspect vacuum leak. Haven't done an idle relearn since I haven't changed anything.

Any ideas? MAF sensor? Is there a way to check that with a meter?

I have the same problem with my 1996 LX. I took it to our Honda dealer shop and they did a compression test and said my engine was wore out and needed replaced. Hope you have a better diagnosis than I did!
