How to keep dash strong from UV (sun) stress?
How to keep dash strong from UV (sun) stress?
So far my dash board and the rest of the plastic interior is fine, but how long would you say that the dashboard will last with hot sunny days? I live in Oregon/Washington.
The best defense is a windshield cover like most people have to block the sun.
Armor-all, I put it on today but then read how it draws stuff out of the dash, making crack over time so I think i'll rinse that out. I don't care about the new dash look, just want it to last 50 years or so! I guess dashboard cracks don't reduce the functionality of the car anyway but I'd rather not have any form.

Re: How to keep dash strong from UV (sun) stress?
my dash has held up fine so far with really nothing to protect it.. I live in Vegas, and interior heat has been enough to melt plastic toy cars inside my car..
Oh, and my car has seen stupid amounts of humidity (south carolina), freezing temps when I lived in upstate NY, Vegas summers (outside temps as high as the 120s), and everything that western WA state threw at it. All this without any sort of dash treatment, sun shades, etc..
Only protection I have from the sun are my tinted windows: 5% rear and rear quarter windows, 35% front windows, and just a 6" strip of 5% at the top of my windshield.
That said, I think you'll be fine.

Stay away from armor all and other s**t like that, don't use soap either, I clean my dash with water and sometimes with baby wipes so I know it doesn't have any harmful chemicles. Windshield covers work marvelous and tinted windows do aswell. My mothers pathfinder has custom honemade cloth covers and looks really nice. Would post pics but am on iPhone.

Yeah please avoid the armor-all. It tends to leave a shiny finish, so when you drive into the sun it's like someones shoving a giant spotlight in your face.

use something like meguiars interior protectant (the kind that only cleans and does not leave any shine at all). but most importantly, leave the front windows cracked about an inch, and moonroof if you have one. those foil backed cheap window screens will help also, but not required. you dont even need the ones that cover the whole window, just the dash is fine. i had my airbag cover crack after a couple yrs of owning the car, but rest of the dash is fine. that airbag is a different type of plastic (and color now) so im not surprised.
