EM1 Clean title search: Go salvage?
EM1 Clean title search: Go salvage?
I've been waiting for someone on craigslist to put up a clean title EM1 with not a crazy amount of miles on it. Hasn't happened. I found one with 85k which is barely anything, but it's salvage.

I'm 16 and don't know how salvage affects you. All I know is that salvage means that the vehicle had been in an accident before or was stolen and that you can't get full coverage on it.
1.) Why would I need full coverage on it anyways? I wouldn't be able to afford it on any car, clean or salvage.
2.) The guy said that he's in "no rush to sell" and that he's selling because he bought a new car and house. He can also spell and has normal sentence structures which says a lot about the owners of cars.
3.) Salvage cars are harder to sell, but this is an EM1! They sell like hot cakes, especially low milage and well taken care of.
4.) The guy said that it has the original B16 motor w/ only 85k miles
Is there anything else about salvage that should turn me away immediately? Should I check it out or keep waiting for a clean title car? Also, should people be hesitant at all when you ask for their VIN number? He seemed so.
Thanks.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY FAST!
Seriously, it's totally not worth it. Usually they have constant problems and you can't trade them in 'cause the dealers usually won't take 'em.
Just part of my journey into buying salvage title: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...e-vehicle.html
That car is ridiculously priced. In most everybody's opinion a salvage title is worth half of book, at most.
Try searching every craigslist within driving distance.

Re: EM1 Clean title search: Go salvage?
Often salvage titles are given to EM1s not because they were in an accident, but because someone stole it and quickly stripped the wheels, gauge cluster, seats, brakes and tail lights to sell. The engine isn't always taken, because it has the vin attached and is harder to sell. That's one possibility, and not one you need to worry about if its the source of the salvage title.
If it was crashed, just stay away, not worth it.
I know the feeling of seeing the picture and falling in love, but if the deal isn't worth it, you need to walk away. It's tough even for us older guys sometimes.

Yea they are hard to come by... that is why I jumped and dropped $9k for my clean Em1 with 45k Original miles on it with an engine/turbo build. It blue books for $8800 with just the miles and stock motor. I could easily sell it for more then $10k... at least that is what I would like to believe.

Re: EM1 Clean title search: Go salvage?
Haha try the old lady one. It was sitting in a garage for a long time. An old couple in there 50's drove it maybe about 3-4 thousand miles a year and then sold it.
Re: EM1 Clean title search: Go salvage?
There was a guy on here earlier that had an EM1 with something stupid like 10k miles on it. Not sure if he sold it but he was looking for like $11,000.
I'd be iffy about a salvage title. If it was gonna be a track car that I cage with race seats and harness then I wouldn't think twice about it, but would still give it a thorough inspection. Like gearbox said, there's a ton of different reasons why a title is salvaged, and most of the time it's for something stupid. Always gotta be on the safe side, though. CL is a shady as **** website.
Definitely get that VIN number and run a carfax.

Re: EM1 Clean title search: Go salvage?
i bought mine in 01 and it had a salvage title. well its not an em1 but still an ek civic i paid 5k for it then. it was the best purchase i ever made i have had 0 issues with this car. I even wrecked it again in the fall and had it fixed up and it still has no major issues. If the price is right i would do it and as long as you get everything checked out on it it should be fine.
Re: EM1 Clean title search: Go salvage?
I've had a mixture of results from buying a car on craigs. Some are a deal some are junk. I found a clean title em1.. But. Now I have work to do that I did not notice the day I bought it...def watch out I had to drive for a clean title em1 .. 2-3 hours. Look outside your area if your willing to drive
