Whats the deal with the HXs?
Whats the deal with the HXs?
Hi, I'm looking to buy a 6th gen, maybe 7th and trying to wrap my head around all the honda stuff since I've never had one yet. Fuel efficiency is important (I do tons of highway driving) and I see HX's were best in that category.
Information seems low on them so I have some questions. Were they only produced 96-02, then stopped or changed name with same engine? Do the HX have CTV, or are they manual/auto trans like the rest (or maybe it depends on year)? In terms of features is it more like DX or LX?
And, are they hard to find, low production or not in north america? Out of 8000 civic advertised for sale in my city none said HX, makes me wonder.
Thanks for any info

Re: Whats the deal with the HXs?
The HX won a BOAT load of awards for efficiency, low cost and emissons. It's hands down the best civic of those years if you're looking for MPG. The CVT (continuously variable transmission) was only available in (automatic) HX's (in civics of those years). Essentially what the CVT's purpose was, is to give an "infinite" number of gear ratios to max efficiency for the speed you were going.
The HX's are all over, at least in the U.S. I don't know about Canada or anything south of the border. They are probably very hard to find because of their fuel efficiency and with gas creeping on 4$ a gallon they aren't ready to give them up. I have no idea as to why they stopped production in 02, 7th gen civics aren't my specialty. Lucky for you, just about everyone else on this forum is, lol.

Re: Whats the deal with the HXs?
hx is in its own class. better than dx/lx, maybe not as good as ex but thats relative. the hx all have vtec lean burn motors and if you master keeping them in lean mode, you will get crazy good mileage. most members here average 45-50mpg which is better than hybrid civics. the hx combines light weight with a very efficient motor and two cat converters. the auto version comes with cvt, which is an auto that is belt driven instead of gear driven. therefore an infinite number of gears are available. when you accelerate, its very hard to tell when the trans switches to the next gear. they also have a sport mode.one of the best cars honda produced. it was getting such good gas mileage that they had to tone it down due to gas companies getting angry that a production non hybrid was using so little gas. the official explanation was that lean burn produced too much NoX emissions, but that is a lie. the second cat converter solved that problem and gave the car ULEV status just like the regular models. one member here even had an 01 hx cvt with a turbo lol, and it was pretty impressive.

Interesting stuff.
Actually it looks like they continued it into 2005, at least there are some models labeled with lean burn and vtech-e, perhaps they're not wholly comparable if they dropped the HX designation.

i don't think they continued the CVT model until 2005...

Re: Whats the deal with the HXs?
i just bought a 97 civic hx but didnt know what it was cuz the badge on the rear passenger side was gone, mine is a 5 speed, gets great gas mileage, and with the simple bolt on mods ive done, its a really fun car. i didnt know about the great info on this car until i joined this forum ( which was today) but i paid 2 grand for it and it has not given me a bit of trouble. you can see pics of it on my profile. also can anyone tell me why my haynes manual says v-tec-e? what the heck is the "E" for?

Re: Whats the deal with the HXs?
it still gets around 100 whp similar to the older hx civics. most normal civics are about the same too. we are only talking about 10whp differences between most models unless you go to the SI with 140whp.
can i get someone to recommend a set of fairly inexpensive headers for my D16Y5? i have a set that i bought used from a friend, but they are rusty. ive managed to polish off alot of the rust but now i think i want a brand new set. in chrome. also any recommendations on an intake would be helpful too. in addition to these mods i need to know what im gonna need to buy to go from the headers to the DC sports muffler i have, cuz the exhaust system is bone stock. except for the dc muffler.
thanks,

Re: Whats the deal with the HXs?
They made an HX in 2005 with CVT transmission... I know this because I bought one brand new back then. Now I live on the east coast and the dealer told me you don't find them that often, as they are mainly sold on the west coast
It is definitely great on gas as I average anywhere from 38 - 42 mpg and that is after 6 years & 245,000 miles.
