Re: Engine swaps 101 for 6th gen and earlier models
I have the ex trim so I believe its the d16y8? I know there's a way to double check using the vin but I'm not sure how so if u know if u wanna lemme know I can check my vin. But as far as power goes I wanna have a nice Honda that can move. I don't wanna just put a cart can on and be called a ricer. My main motivation is being passed by a Taurus on the highway
my power car topped out at like 105ish. I know these rnt very specific goals but hopefully this gives an idea of where I wanna go with things. Oh and I currently have an automatic id Like to put a manual in it if tht plays into ur advise at all.

Re: Engine swaps 101 for 6th gen and earlier models
The D16y8 is probably the best D-series engine Honda ever built, it has huge potential to make big power with a turbo if your willing to shell out enough cash. If you want to do something a little more conservative though you have could go with something like this add potentially add around 50hp..
I/H/E
Hondata S300
ZEX 59300 Cam w/ upgraded valves, springs and retainers.
and a dyno tune.
with a stock bottom end and keeping it N/A thats as good as it gets, if you want more power than that then you'd need to go turbo and that comes with a very special series of head aches.

An exhaust is only as good as the most restricting component, you need header to tip. On an average turbo set-up, you'd probably be in the low 200hp range.

Re: Engine swaps 101 for 6th gen and earlier models
Start with the basics.
Get a decent quality exhaust, if you get a cheap ebay one it will have rust holes in it within the year. Megan Racing is a decent quality low cost option. Then get a the cheapest intake you can find on ebay and put on a good quality filter, an AEM dryflow for example. After that I would get Hondata S300 and start getting serious about your exact goals and draw up some plans from there.
One of the big advantages of keep the D is that you can do a gradual build.

Re: Engine swaps 101 for 6th gen and earlier models
On eBay should I look for a cheap aem or k&n or does it not matter? With the intake will I need a bigger throttle body? Will I need an upgraded intake manifold? Also I was planning on putting a manual tranny in does it matter when in my plans I should do this?
Re: Engine swaps 101 for 6th gen and earlier models
I was checking out those Megan exhaust systems. First off what all parts do I need exactly. And how do I know if its legal they were saying something about how they may not be street legal

Re: Engine swaps 101 for 6th gen and earlier models
Don't bother upgrading the intake manifold or throttle body at this point, you'll only get gains from those if your running high compression pistons or a turbo. The only difference between a $300 AEM intake and a ebay intake with an AEM filter is a sticker, don't waste your money getting a name brand. K&N filters are junk btw..
After-market parts typically aren't DOT approved, but nothing is, it's illegal to even lower your car in most places. Get a header, high flow cat and a cat back exhaust. That still leaves the midpipe, but an exhaust shop can make one cheap when they install it. Look into magnaflow and greddy exhausts too.
Do the manual trans soon if you can, because you'll gain hp from it, but it's a huge job.

uhn, not to be harsh... but could you create a new thread with your questions?
This one is supposed to be an informative one, not for questions...
If you have a contribution to the main subject, please post.
if only questions that are not related to the thread, please create a new thread.
Mom teached me to keep things in place... This is very helpful thread and do not want it cluttered with non-related stuff.

Re: Engine swaps 101 for 6th gen and earlier models
Good point Sdaidoji, these questions are getting pretty specific. Create a new thread pennstate and I'll move all these posts over.
Re: helpin the newbie out general info on 98 civic ex
Thanx sdaidoji. Alrite I'm gonna throw this back out to anyone for imput. Looking at cold air intake vs RAM intake. Saw a cheap cold air on eBay for 40 buck some no name brand thinking that with a aem filter. Will the aem fit rite on this no name intake? Also looking at exhaust mods. Wht happens putting a aftermarket exhaust? Will it pass inspection? Etc? Plus any other imput from anyone to help thanx
Re: helpin the newbie out general info on 98 civic ex
You should be fine as long as your catalytic converter is good and you don't have any emissions issues or CELs. That's how it is in NY. I'm assuming you're from PA, so I don't know your inspection procedure. Are there noise guidelines? If you get a good exhaust, I wouldn't worry about that though.
As for cold air vs short ram. I like to play it safe, so I took the cold air intake that came with my car out and put a short ram in. I work in an area that likes to flood in the spring, and I can't risk destroying my car. I did notice a small gain in the lower RPM range(day to day driving).

Re: helpin the newbie out general info on 98 civic ex
well i know i have emissions but i dont know how strict they r. im being told as long as i have a good enough cat on there i should be fine. rite now leaning towards the megan racing Model Number : MR-CBS-HC92C and Model Number : MR-SSH-D16 first off is that all i would need to complete my exhaust system and two any u guys know how good that cat is?
and as for the in take is the cool air that much better vs the ram air? like melj said frying my engine with water slightly worries me even though i dont think i have much flooding in my area but it only takes one time...

A D16y8 is the stock engine for a for an Ej8, if it were anything model aside from the EX/Si then it would be a Ej6 with a D16y7.

What does a dyno tune consist of and how much does it generally cost for a d16y8 civic?
Sorry for noob questions
Re: helpin the newbie out general info on 98 civic ex
, but what do you mean by “header upgrades”? Does that mean getting a whole new head, (including the valves, springs, camshaft etc.) for the engine? Re: helpin the newbie out general info on 98 civic ex
Nope, the header is another name for the exhaust manifold. So essentially a header upgrade is a new exhaust manifold with higher flow
Re: helpin the newbie out general info on 98 civic ex
Re: helpin the newbie out general info on 98 civic ex
Headers would be the best place to start because as mentioned before, it improves exhaust gas flow. So many ricers out there think that putting a gigantic fart cannon on their car is helping it. They obviously have no idea what backpressure is. If you're gonna tune your car, do it the right way.
