Exclamation Need help pinpointing a chirping noise!

I have a 2000 Honda Civic EX 1.6L SOHC non-VTEC, manual. When driving the car, the chirping only happens when I'm at an idle. It doesn't get louder the faster I drive or anything, but i want to get rid of the noise. Someone told me it could be my belt, though I'm thinking it might be a pulley. I'm just looking for other opinions so please let me know what you think it is. Thanks!

It sounds like the belts are worn, do you know when the last time they were changed is?

Re: Need help pinpointing a chirping noise!

I'm actually not sure when it was changed last. I might as well go ahead and change it just to have some peace of mind. Also, what might be some symptoms of a timing belt going bad. In 2nd and 3rd gear, while at low rpms (between 2000-4000 rpms), the car feels like it is having trouble pulling. An example would be like if you were walking and someone else in front of you would occasionally pull on your shirt. I really don't know any other way to explain. Feel free to voice any reasons on why this could be happening and some symptoms of a bad timing belt. Thanks in advance.

Re: Need help pinpointing a chirping noise!

when was the last tune up? Sounds like a random misfire in those gears. tune up means;
New plgus
New plug wires
new fuel filter
new air filter if needed
new cap/rotor
a run of fuel injection cleaner through the system.

Re: Need help pinpointing a chirping noise!

I have new plugs, plug wires, new fuel filter, and new air filter. I haven't ran fuel injection cleaner through and am not sure what cap/rotor is. I will have to get a recording tomorrow during the day for you and post it tomorrow afternoon. I appreciate the help and just really want to get the car back to running perfect. I may look into putting a different motor into soon, maybe with part of my tax return. Any suggestions? I want to make sure all I have to change out is the engine and not the transmission too.

Why do you want to swap in a new engine, more power or just something with lower miles?

Re: Need help pinpointing a chirping noise!

I was thinking belt/belts as well, but a chirp could be a number of things. The test for that is easy. Just pop the hood while it's running and spray water or belt dressing on the belts. If the noise stops, you've found the problem. This is considering the problem is actually the belt. A vid clip would be nice.

Re: Need help pinpointing a chirping noise!

I have a 7th gen and mine chirps too.. I'm pretty sure it's associated with my power steering pulley. Which could be a result of an improperly tightened belt (since I did mine without a gauge, though I have retightened it since). Change your belt and see if the noise goes away... if not it could be pulley related.
