My '97 Civic HX (D16y5) with manual tranny has begun to exhibit some weird transmission problems and I'm wondering if this is serious or something relatively easy to fix.

Here's the symptom: In all gears, the car lunges when I'm not accelerating. It's almost as if I'm going very very slowly in 1st gear, but this condition is found in all gears (although I get less of a "jolt" when I'm in 5th of course). Also, when I'm engaging the clutch the RPM warbles and power transfer is weak. After a period of weak power transfer I can get power at higher RPMs.

Can anyone out there help me diagnose this problem?

could you be a little bit more specfic when you say "lunges when not accelerating"? with the clutch engaged? at a stand still? while moving? have you had the clutch replaced at all in the car? how many miles are on the car?

if its the clutch going out the engline would rev freely and car move slowly catching up to speed, this seems like engine problem if those symtoms seems to be involve with air fuel or ignition.check ur plugs and all wires, coils and distributor.
check air filter if u have one
