I can think of a few things to do, but there isn't much we can do with the speedo itself.
If the speedo isn't accurate, one could send it to a speedo repair shop.
For a price, of course.

--------------------------------

Check (ask the owner) if the drive gear and trans is original,
check the speedo head for correct application

Check tire diameter for being close to original

Use a scanner to read the vehicle speed as seen by the PCM and compare it to the speedometer.

Pace it with a GPS

Figure that the error is well within 10% and it is fine.
(I forget what the actual amount of acceptable error is at the moment.)

Tell you nothing is wrong:
Operating as designed (not necessarily as desired).

Charge you a $100 bill for my time

Re: how do you calibrate a speedometer?

a few mph is normal, there is always error esp in a civic cluster. if you want accurate, go buy ferrari lol. all the dealer does is diagnose and replace. no fixing these things and they usually put a sticker in the door that says mileage reset to zero on such and such date. a few may send it out to have the mileage reflashed but that costs extra and most do not even bother. just find a used one on ebay with similar miles. most speedo shops will not touch the newer 03+ clusters because they are difficult to get back together by hand (actually near impossible).

Re: how do you calibrate a speedometer?

Hmm so what your saying is that when your going 55 your speedo says your going 60? That seems about right give or take a few mph. I believe most if not all car makers do that because (and bash me if im wrong) its illegal to sell a car with a speedo that reads slow so they play it safe. Heck I had a 06 Kawasaki z750 and the speedo read almost 10mph off at 75 and that was normal.

Re: how do you calibrate a speedometer?

or maybe get a different wheel/tire setup to compensate for the speedo difference? i found out that my cousin's coupe, that he sold me, shows 5mph faster than actual by comparing it to my nav unit. i also verified it with some speed boxes that cops put out on the streets, and also by driving next to a newer civic with those digital speed displays that can be easily seen from the outside.
oh well, this should keep me away from cops.
