Spent $1,500 trying to solve this......

Yea so i have spent almost $1,500 trying to get rid of this grinding noise from my civic.

my civic : 96 lx 4dr sedan

So when i do a hard acceleration from 0-20 mph...i hear this pipe rattling grinding noise...from the bottom of my car...

I have changed my old heat shield, new muffler and got new engine mounts...and i still hear it...

i dont know wat to do..and its driving me nuts...its not so annoying but i would like my car to sound how it did..when i first got it......

any advice........

Find out where it is coming from. Is the piping to close to the bottom of the car or what. Is this even the problem.

It doesnt matter the piping could be up to close or something. Find out where it is exactly coming from. Look for any clearance issues.

Check your exhaust hangers.

put the front of the car on jacks and have some press the gas while you listen. Dont kill yourself... Check your front wheel bearings.

I had the same thing on my Civic. It was coming from the hanger by the catalytic converter. Cost me $20 in parts. Only happened in the 0 - 15 mph range or occassionally when idling.

Also make sure all of your expansion fittings on the exhaust are tight, a lot of mine weren't and just tightening those eliminated all the rattling I had in my exhaust.

Dood!!!

This sounds just like what I'm experiencing. It's exactly that rattle noise. I thought it was the tranny about to break down or something.

You can't hear it during idle but once you accelerate 0-20mph it makes a rattling/Tat tat tat noise. But it's not from the back that I'm hearing this. It's very much in the front/engine bay area.

So, all we have to do is replace the hanger? How do we know for sure?

The hanger will be cracked/falling off.

See the 2 metal prongs? That is where the front hanger goes. As you can tell, I need a new one. lol Name: hanger1.jpg

Really?

I'm going to check my prongs. No! I'm talking about the ones underneath the car. LOL!

I can't believe that's what's causing the noise but I'll check it out.
