Can I use this head?

I'm looking to replace the head in a 96', with a 16y8 block.
The one on the bottom of the photo came out of the car (stamped 96')and has a bad cam.
The one on the top is stamped 99'.
Would this swap work? What gasket kit would I need?

If it's the same donor engine (d16y8 head) you will be fine. You will need a head gasket, intake manifold gasket, cam seal and valve cover gasket set while you are at it and you are set.

Re: Can I use this head?

That is a D16Z6 head and should be a direct fit replacement for yours. You can use either head gasket. The head bolts are different length though, so if your putting a Z6 head on, use Z6 head bolts.

Also, I think the distributor does not line up properly, so you have to get a hold of a Z6 distributor and install its internals into your y8 dizzy in order for it to line up and work.

I hope this helps. I have heard of people having trouble with the swap but if I had the head already I'd try it. Good luck. Oh, also use the Y8 timing belt.

Re: Can I use this head?

Should work yea... Why so many mismatched parts??? If you already have the gasket slide it on the head make sure everything lines up, then take it off and slide it on the block and make sure everything lines up... just to be 100% sure.

Re: Can I use this head?

Obviously I'm not normally a Honda guy, (old VW's are my thing) the civic is my son's.
I got the replacement head off E-bay, the gaskets I ordered from the LPS for a 96', and that's what I got.
If I open the package... no return.

My confusion comes from the fact that I don't know how to identify the various
heads. Is the number on it somewhere that I don't see?
Anyone got a link?

Tomorrow I'll try to exchange the gasket kit for a D16Z6.

Thanks for all the help!

Re: Can I use this head?

You probably don't need to exchange the gasket kit. I only did a visual inspection of the head. I'm about 98% sure that it's d16z6. Often the engine code is stamped on the block, but I don't think it's stamped anywhere on the head. Make sure you get z6 head bolts or your going to be in a lot of trouble. Or get ARP head studs.
