Unhappy Fuel Gauge problems

Hey everyone I asked this question in some other forums but what can be wrong with my gauge? It moves around all the time when I drive and will never tell me how much fuel I have, other people and forums have told me it's either my fuel sending unit or my cluster, I am a complete n00b when it comes to cars how would you guys recommend I fix this?
Any tutorials? Im pretty sure it's the sending unit, I heard I have to buy the entire sending console if I want to fix it myself, how much will this run me and what part should I ask for when ordering one?
