Bad Compressor?

Bad Compressor?
A while back I made a post about how when im idle and have my a/c on it would create a rough idle....yesterday I was sitting at a redlight with the a/c on and the compressor kicked in and it was a constant thud thud thud with at least a 2 second interval in between each thud, it was constant until the compressor kicked off, it made the whole car shake and it kinda felt as if the car was about to die. all the brakets are tight, motor mounts are secure, im beginning to think my compressor is kaput.....it is a 97 after all! any ideas fellas?
