96-2000 civic automatic tranny issues?

Guys Im new to honda and I want to purchase a low mileage one ( under 90 K). But I am reluctant to get one with an automatic. What Ive read after 100,000 miles is when these trannies go. And its most likely ends up costing from $1800-2000 for a rebuilt one. I see minimal problems with the 5 speed. I see alot of civics for sale between 125K-160K for sale with automatics, no 5 speeds. Whats your honest opinion on these automatics. thanks

I have a auto 96 with 209k miles, never a trans issue, but I kept up with changing the trans fluid.

I think it depends on how it was driven and how it was taken care of.

Maintenance is key but it's quite rare to have problems.

On my daily driver I'm at 182,000 miles with zero problems on it's automatic. I definitely would recommend using only Honda ATF-Z1 though as wear is vastly accelerated when using Mobil 1 or Castrol Import in my experience. Shifting is a bit smoother with the Honda fluid as well.
