Unhappy audio questions

hey guys

so this is my first, big "semi" large task that I have taken on by myself, so I ran into some issues that i need help with:

I am trying to install 5 1/4'' componet speakers that I got from Crutchfield to put in the 6 1/2'' front speaker slot. Crutchfield said they would give me an adapter bracket to make it work. I got the brackets in the mail and they are the 6x9 brackets for the rear deck, and they said that the 5 1/4's won't fit in the front unless you do some serious modification to the bracket to make it fit. Could I possibly cut down the bracket to make the speaker fit? Or should I return these?

I really wanted to run with component's in the front with speakers that had tweeters that could be mounted in the cone (SRP1320M's are the one's I am using), and these were the only ones that I found that could work. I have 6x9 clarion component's already installed in the back with a pioneer receiver, and eventually a sub/5-channel amp in the back. The rear component's also have tweeters mounted in the cone as well.

My second problem is; the passenger door panel. I tried putting the door panel back on my Honda until I got the speaker issue resolved, excluding the bottom part of the panel. I went to go screw in the door handle, and I noticed that the screw does not reach the hole in the door. My brother suggested that the door panel isn't sitting right, and I don't have the molding between the window/door panel on either, because I had trouble putting that back on, as well. What could possibly be causing this problem?

My third (and final) issue is, where is a creative yet sophisticated place where I can put the crossovers? I thought it over before I bought these but I was wondering if you had more, creative ideas.

Thanks for the help guys, if you want pictures I can take some and put them up as soon as I get home, but I think you guys kind of get the idea. The adapter bracket is a simple 6x9 with 4 holes to accommodate the speaker (the 6 1/2's are 3 holes).

What year and model car?

I do not think there are 6 1/2 to 5 1/4 adapter plates around (could be wrong) I would send them back and get a 6 1/2 that fits using the Crutchfield site. Many 6 1/2 you will need to cut the back plastic cup in order to make them fit (for 96 to 00 civics) As for the cross over depending on the size you might be able to attach it to back side of the door arm rest I think it is hollow.
As for the tweeters I know on the Ex model you might be able to modify the stock location and make them fit. For other models you can use a hole saw for a drill and mount them in the upper portion of the door close to the side view mirror.

As for the door fit, I would take it off again and make sure there is nothing blocking the fitment, start by fitting the window groove first then work your way down lining up the armrest to be sitting on the little metal bracket from the door. Then snap it back into place.

I would return the ones they gave you and tell them you want the correct adapter. They make them. You could even make your own out of mdf...Not hard at all.

You just have to play with the door panels, make sure the top slides in correctly before you clip any other part in.

I put my crossovers in the foam in the door panel. Hidden and simple.

Re: audio questions

Sorry, I have a 2000 Civic EX. I really didn't want to drill into my door panel to mount the tweeters because after constantly shutting the door, the tweeter will mostly loosen up and, eventually, fall out. I liked the clarion's because they fit right into the center of the cone and they don't need to be mounted outside of the speaker.

The foam in the door panel for the crossovers is genius, I will certainly consider that.

I will definitely give Crutchfield a call tomorrow about the adapter bracket. I am sure I can mod the 6x9 bracket to make it fit but I would rather wait and see if they have them, first.

2000 ex coupe? my 96 ex coupe has tweeters in a pod by the side view mirrors. I just took out the old tweeters and mounted new ones in there.

Re: audio questions

Just got off the phone with Crutchfield. They don't make adapter brackets for the front... so my choices are to either make my own or mod the 6x9's that they gave me...if i was to make it myself, what material would I use? and what type of machine would I need to get access to?

Thanks

edit:... just tried to mod the bracket with my dremel and this plastic is indestructible.. there is almost no (safe) way to mod this thing..

Why the desire for 5 1/4? Save yourself the headaches and get the right size.

Well for one I am fairly stubborn, I need to cancel out all possible options before going on to another project or changing my design

The second reason is because these are the only component speakers that I have found that have self-mounted tweeters. They don't make these speakers in 6 1/2, only 5 1/4. Plus I can't return these, so...

Can you take a few pics of the door panel and the speakers and lining up to the opening in the door so I can get a visual of your install.

You might want to try this, the mounting holes for the woofer, take a little piece of steel or alum. bolt it the speaker mounting hole and then extend it to the door's plastic then screw it to the door that way. I am not sure if you will have enough room to plant the tweeter to the woofer in order to mount the factory plastic speaker grill back on.

Re: audio questions

No offense, but you are making this more complicated then needed. The fit is not that off, just get a few washers and screw use 2 of the tabs and screw it into the plastic, as for the third screw (optional) use a small piece of flat metal screw to tab then extend it out to the plastic and screw it in. I would also check the tweeter clearance inserted into the woofer to make sure you can snap back on the honda speaker grill.

Re: audio questions

Wow, it sounds almost too simple, haha. But you're probably right; I will take some more pictures tonight, I have a boatload of screws and washers at home. I was thinking that I needed to have a bracket somehow, didn't know you could just bolt the damn thing right into it. That makes everything a whole lot easier..
