Help identify this pipe

I have a '98 Civic Sedan LX. I noticed this cut/split in the rubber hose in the engine bay and I don't know just how severe the split is.

So, first thing first can you help me identify this pipe? And secondly, by the looks of it should I have it replaced immediately?

Re: Help identify this pipe

Looks like just the protective foam coating on your A/c line. There's a hardline within that coating.

The coat is there to protect the hardline from excessive heat (even though it is right above the manifold lol), and from dings/dents/scratches.

I'm not sure how you would go about replacing it though.

yeah thats a big hassle to replace. i wouldnt bother unless you hear a loud hissing sound and then your a/c doesnt get cold anymore lol. it does look like just a foam protector.

Re: Help identify this pipe

You could get some of that metal tape for ducts and wrap it if you are really concerned... A friend of mine fixed a muffler with that stuff lol... and he is a mechanic... I'd just leave it myself.

Re: Help identify this pipe

that is harmless, just ignore it. if you are really concerned you can gently spread it apart with your fingers to see how deep it goes. it looks like its just on the outer foam which doesnt do anything at all. its only an a/c line that has a protective foam on the outside. that foam is designed to get cut/split/melted like that to protect the actual a/c line which is in the middle.

Re: Help identify this pipe

Oh, okay. I thought it led to the thermostat of something..haha

If it just goes to the A/C, then it's all good. If I notice any problems come this summer I'll take a closer look at it.

Thanks guys!
