Rep Power: 0 Oil disappearing! Where's it going?! Mystery...
Hi all,
I'd really appreciate some help with this problem.
I have a '99 Honda Civic, which loses oil quick - the oil light currently comes on roughly once a week. I have put cardboard underneath the engine for several nights and there is not one spot of oil on it. There is also no black smoke that I have seen coming out.
My mechanic has had a good look twice now, but can't find any oil leaks or any other problems and is mystified. It's had a service and seems to be running ok.
Obviously, my next course is take it to another mechanic, but before I do that has anyone got any ideas??? I could just be throwing money away.
I'm not very good with cars, so any technical terms may need to be explained, sorry! I'm really looking for ideas I can suggest to my mechanic.
Any help would be massively appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Jamie

sounds like expensive engine work. if its not leaking out from seals, its prolly being burned and that means new piston rings and valve guides (motor rebuild). if the oil light is coming on, you already have serious damage done and it will only get worse due to low oil pressure. maybe the oil pump is crapping out.

There's no smoke at all that I can see, apart from a little white smoke in the first couple of minutes of running.
Thanks for the help, sounds like bad news. Any other opinions?

if its a small leak, after the engine warms up and burn the coolant, it will run fine without smoke.
pcv valve is very important to vent corrosive gases out of the motor. if its clogged, over time it can kill the engine, or at least make it run like crap.

probably you burned your oil along with the combustion.
i have experienced this with another car (a toyota), and have to replace the piston rings. your engine needs an over haul man!
