help- clunking noise

I just purchase my 96 civic coupe EX and was told that my car had coil overs installed. I have not looked to confirm this but I have noticed that there is a faint clunking noise when I hid a bump and sometimes when I shift. is this because the coil overs or should i be looking for another problem. my noise is not that loud like EM1FTW's but sounds like it could be the same problem. The drives straight with no wobbles or shacking even at high speeds ( took it up to 100 mph to see what it could do - very fun). Any ideas or direction would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: help- clunking noise

It could easily be a spring rubbing on itself depending on the spring rate/type/installation. Or maybe they were not locked in place, therefore a sleeve is loose. Get under it and check it out right away.

Also check the car's front upper control arm mounting bolts (one on the front and back of the strut towers). If one of those is loose an odd clunking noise will happen and it's a simple fix.

Re: help- clunking noise

they might not have installed them properly. or something suspension related may have worked itself loose.

Re: help- clunking noise

well i took it to a shop real quick to see if it was a serious problem. They told me struts are bad but they didn't even take it into the garage, they just drove it. the car does seem to bounce a little to much so maybe the shocks are bad. when the weather clears up I will get under it and check it out myself, as I don't have a covered area to work on it right now. Thanks for the insight.

what does it mean to lock in the shocks. not real familiar with installing shocks.

Re: help- clunking noise

What I meant about locking was the coil overs have adjustable rings in which the car is raised or lowered (the spring perch). If those were not tightened or locked in place they could create noise as things move around.

Re: help- clunking noise

So I got under the car today and saw my problem. First the coil overs look like a no name ebay special. second the struts are leaking. So now I will be looking for some good struts to put on my car. Any Ideas?

Depending on spring rate, KYB AGX or Koni yellows.
