Re: 97 civic auto tranny problem

Yes, it is a trouble code with the transmission. Did you leave any connectors loose? Otherwise you'll have to let us know what the code number is.

Re: 97 civic auto tranny problem

Check for any loose or cracked electrical tranny connections, first. Make sure all hydraulic lines are installed properly- nothing reversed. Check fluid level - make sure you are using Honda fluid not a knock off. You might have to reset the light- is all.
Look for the obvious because that's usually what it is on civics.

Re: 97 civic auto tranny problem

Ok, yes those codes indicate 'lock up clutch does not engage'. Possible causes (just as we stated-loose wires): A) Disconnected lock-up control solenoid valve B connnector, B) Short or open in lock-up control solenoid valve B wire, or C) Faulty lock-up control solenoid valve B.

I can't really type the instructions on how to track it down (it has diagrams). I can almost guaranty any problems you are having are due to loose/corroded connectors to the transmission/transmission ECU.

Re: 97 civic auto tranny problem

It's on top, yes. The 2pin connector is right there. Measure resistance between both terminals and body ground. This should be 14-25ohms. If that's within spec, the solenoid is fine. I'm still guessing connection somewhere.

Re: 97 civic auto tranny problem

Just out of curiousity, did you unplug and replug it a few times? If so, do an ECU reset procedure and see if you still have the codes. That might fix the problem. If not you can get a solenoid at a local dealer or on-line. There are several Honda dealerships that sell the parts on-line, but know that shipping and handling can sometimes make or break the cost savings difference. Not sure but some auto parts stores may also carry them *shrug*.

PS there is also a shift solenoid filter that is sandwiched between the solenoids and the transmission housing. I'd even try replacing that before buying a solenoid!
