Re: 98 ex speedometer problem

Check rhe connection at the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The output of that sensor drives the speedometer. It's on the tranny near the firewall plugged in going straight down.

Re: 98 ex speedometer problem

I had a very similar problem. Mine would work sometimes, and not others. Quit somtimes while I was driving, and start working again for no appearant reason.
It ended up being that the wire coming through the firewall from the speedsensor to the speedometer, had rub the insulation off over time, and would make contact with steel, causing the speedo to not work. That's what the service guy told me.
I got charged for the diagnostic check, and that was it. He said they just spliced the wire and repaired the insulation. I'm guessing the wrpped it in electrical tape. But it has worked since then, and if it happens again, I'll know where to look.
