VTEC CEL Help

I was on my way to work the other day and i was passing some one and VTEC kicked in and just as soon disengaged along with my CEL coming on. I stop in at my local Autozone to check it out and its a problem with the VTEC solenoid.

I call Honda since no one else apparently makes it and the guy says they want 300 dollars for the solenoid. I need to know if there is anything else that can be done to make sure that i need to put in the time and money into replacing it. Is it possible that there might be a lose connection or something along those lines or what.

Oh yeah some info that might help its a 98 D16Y8 with minor bolt-ons.

Re: VTEC CEL Help

i dont have ave a lot of experience with engine parts but since the interior of the solenoid gets filled with oil, can u just like rinse it out? im always interested in learning new ways to care for my car so i dont have to keep paying those grease monkeys for work i can do. would u recommend just buying a new screen for the solenoid or should it not be that bad? thanks for the help in advance.

Re: VTEC CEL Help

well here is where its located. This pics on a 7th gen but it should be in the same place

i think its only held on by two 8 or 10 mm bolts. If you clean it i would recommend using throttle body cleaner.

Re: VTEC CEL Help

i just used a cotton cloth to clean it up and wipe the dirt out of the screen. it was just sand pebbles. you could buy a new one, but mine looked good enough to reuse.

Re: VTEC CEL Help

hey guys good news. when i took my car into to get my oil changed, i had them take the solenoid off and clean the filter. the guy that did it must have been mentally retarded bc he said that the light was still on. he never cleared the code so yeah it would be. anyway i ran down the road to autozone and had them clear it and so far no CEL so yay. +1 for all and +1 for the guy at the dealership for not trying to sel me the part but told me to clean it as well. Thanks everyone.
