96 civic idle fluctuation

I have 96 Civic si D16Y8 that I recently removed to rebuilt the head along with other work. I installed it and now after warming up for 5 minutes it the alternates from 1000rpm to 2000 in rhythm but idles normally when out of park. I cleaned out the ICV with no results, any help is appreciated, thanks.

Re: 96 civic idle fluctuation

Did you mix up the plugs between the IACV and TPS? (or was it the IACV and the MAP sensor?) Check that the IACV, TPS, and MAP sensor are plugged into the correct harness plugs.

Another possibility is that you have a vacuum leak.

Re: 96 civic idle fluctuation

is it OBD equipped? if so, may need to do idle learn. drive car to warm up, turn off, disconnect battery, put back, start car, let idle 10 mins without pressing gas or using any accessory, turn off. start it up and see if it fixes idle.

Re: 96 civic idle fluctuation

I know its an old thread but....you still having the problem? First off, reset the ECU like mentioned above. With 6th Gen Civic, the ECU doesent need to do a "idle relearn". Since you said you rebuild the head, did you make sure to scrape off ALL of the old intake manifold gasket? If you left even a little bit on, you'll have a vacuum leak, which will cause a surge in the idle. 2nd, make sure you have all the sensors plugged in to the right one. The MAP sensor and TPS sensor have identicle plugs. If you get them backwards, it'll cauuse the idle problem (thats even if the car runs. Sometimes the car wont even start/run w/the plugs backwards). Try those few things, and see what happens.
