My 96 Civic EX has been hesitating when shifting. It does not do it all the time, usually only after it has been driven for over 20 minutes. When I try to shift into first gear (like after waiting for a stop light), it won't initially go, and then it feels like the accelerator will kick in and the car will lurch forward and it will go. Sometimes it will do the same hesitating between 1st and 2nd gear as well.

I've taken it in to be looked at by my usual mechanic and also took it to the dealership. Of course, the car won't do it when they only drive it for 5 minutes so they can't figure out what the problem is.

I've had the transmission checked, the throttle cleaned. Any other ideas? Does anyone else have this problem? I am tired of getting whiplash and am worried it is safety issue if I one day lurch into another car. Any suggestions are appreciated.

How many miles are on your car?

Have your fuel pressure checked. Maybe your fuel pump is about to go.

You may also need to have your injectors cleaned.
