Weird noise from a/c

Everytime I turn on my a/c I hear a loud kind of grinding noise. I’m just getting into cars so I don’t know to much about mine yet. I have a 2002 Honda Civic ex coupe. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Re: Weird noise from a/c

Three things come to mind.

Compressor bearing gone.
AC fan gone, (it’s the fan on the drivers side)
Interior cabin blower gone.

More details such as is the sound louder inside the car will help with blower motor.

Pretty simple to unplug the ac fan and then start the car and turn the ac on and see if sound is there still.

Thank you so much for the reply! The sound is some what noticeable from inside. It’s only really loud with the hood open. I will check the things you brought up and see if any of those are the problem!

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: Weird noise from a/c

SOME noise when the AC is running is normal and expected.
It is a machine, and is allowed to make noise.

Is it unusually loud? Compare to another car that has no complaints.

@ezone it is more than normal noise. I’ve had this car for about 5 years and have never heard this type of sound before. It is a very loud grinding/ metallic sound to it! Any possible ideas are greatly appreciated!

Re: Weird noise from a/c

Does it make noise ONLY while the AC is on?
Noise only while the AC is off?
Bearing rumble?
Jackhammer noise?

Remove belt and spin pulley, does pulley spin smoothly or does it make noise?
Got pulley wobble?

Post up a video? Record it while it's got the AC on and making noise, and also with the engine running but AC turned off

Just make sure the recording is good enough for the rest of us to hear the noise, my laptops are kinda crummy at reproducing sound

Re: Weird noise from a/c

Jack your car up on the drivers side, pull the wheel and plastic cover off. Then try to shake the AC Clutch by hand.

If it shakes then it could be your AC Clutch nut is loose and the clutch is wobbling. Mine sounded like a bad wheel bearing. I inspected the AC bearing and it looked fine. I had to put a Spring Washer between the outside of the clutch and the nut. You can also put some Loctite on the thread. This a temp fix for now. My clutch had already dug a groove into the pulley.
