Rep Power: 166 2nd Gear Grinding... new clutch?
Alright, so recently my second gear has been really really easy to grind. I literally have to push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, and take time to put it into second if I don't want it to grind. Mechanics have told me my clutch needs to be replaced very soon (original with 150xxx miles). Problem is... I'm not sure if the clutch is causing this or if something else is wrong. Any ideas?

Could be the synchro. Are the revs shooting up in higher gears(slipping).
And fyi, you should be flooring the clutch for every shift .

No they don't shoot up at all. I don't have a lot of knowledge about this stuff so that's why I'm asking. It's just obnoxiously easy to grind second gear and I don't want to replace my clutch and have the problem persist. So you really think it's the synchros?

You can try switching to a synthetic gear oil like Redline or Amsoil to see if it helps any. You can also try double clutching into 2nd, or just skip 2nd gear altogether and go straight to 3rd. You'll have to wind 1st out a little more, but it may help.

Yeah I actually have been double clutching a bit when I down shift around corners. I want the car to last for a while longer though so I'm thinking I'm going to get whatever fixed that needs fixing. I'm just looking to diagnose what needs to be done and finding roundabout how much it's going to cost :/

Re: 2nd Gear Grinding... new clutch?
2nd gear takes A LOT of abuse and is probably the most used gear. It has a pretty decent range, and people usually f up shifts there. Like I said before, you need to make sure you're flooring the clutch. I learned standard on my Si and I had a few grinds into 2nd and I learned quick. It isn't a pleasant feeling or sound. I've only driven my car for 2 years, but I can make it so the shifter literally just slides right into 2nd now. Time your shifting a little better and that may also work like 2002 said.
