i bought a 04 honda civic off a girl that says the timing belt broke came to find out the spring broke causing the belt to slip and chew off some teeth i would say about 6-8, it was out of time maybe by 10-20 degrees. I took the chance of putting a new belt on just to see knowing that there is a chance it would need a head and have bent valves. my question is this i tested compression and got 130-140 on cylinder 1 on 2,3,and 4 i got 0 could i be 180 out of time? should i just pull the head and replace it i bought it cheap i dont mind putting some money into it thanks in advanced

If it were only out of time, all compression test figures would be equal.

When I do a comp test on these using my own equipment and methods, I expect to see 180 PSI or higher.

Pull valve cover off, inspect valve clearances on #4.
If there is zero clearance, adjust to spec and retest compression.
If there is a whole bunch of clearance it's bent at least one of those valves.

With the low test numbers on 1,2,3 I might suspect some valves may have been tweaked on all the cylinders.

Alright well other thing I'm questioning I started it and it ran for about 20 seconds before it died and I did compression checks why would it have ran then died. Also if that are any bent valves in there would it still spin smoothly ? I have no problem turning it over. After work I will pull the cover and check the valve clearances thank you for the advice

LOL...you should be able to tell that easily by the marks,

but i cant see that happening or you would be hitting valves in every cylinder

Well I guess I'll check the timing again when I get home and go from there if I have to pull the head I'll pull it, would that motor be a vetec ? Being as its only a sohc?

If it has a VTEC valve stuck to the head then yes. (D17A2)

No matter, the procedures are the same for either version.

Also....the black plastic trim on top of the valve cover says VTEC on it....but it's easily swapped and someone could just put one on it even though it's not equipped.

Thank you I took the head off and every valve seems to have hit the portions I figured that much due to the compression now to get a new head or swap a used motor ? Also can I use those pistons if they have small dents in them

Talk to a machine shop, see how much for them to get some valves? And install if you cant?

Might be the cheap way out.
I've never had issues with pistons after bending valves in this particular engine, but at the mileage you must have it's probably got stuck oil rings

Any used engine is likely to need a head gasket job.....

It wasn't using any oil I know that that's one thing she was happy about with the car but at 240000 miles it does make me wonder what it will all need I would post pictures of i could figure out how to

Seller would never lie about something like that just to make the sale.....


Most of our customers never know theur engines use oil unless it's leaving puddles or the gravy boat light is on
