2002 civic ac compressor clutch not engaging.

So my civic ac clutch won't engage normally. I get it to engage when I jump the relay in the under hood fuse box. What's not sending the signal to the relay to energize?

Could be many things. I've gone through this on this forum probably a hundred times. Search?

Do the radiator fans turn on when you try to turn on the AC?

I've been searching for a while and I can't find my situation hence the started post. Yes the radiator fans works but does that have anything to do with the air conditioning system? Also as I previously explained my ac works perfect when ac compressor relay jumped; blower fans ops ok. Cold air in cabin, I just don't want to be driving around with a paper clip in my fuse box?

There's rarely a single answer that fits everyones problem.

In so many threads about AC problems in 01-05 cars you can find a usual series of questions I ask...which helps me figure out some likely causes.

Yes the radiator fans works but does that have anything to do with the air conditioning system?
Knowing how the system operates and knowing what part is supposed to operate at which time....and why... are a large part of figuring out what is wrong with it.

Radiator fans run when coolant temperature is hot enough to necessitate extra air flow, but the AC system also controls the radiator fans. There's a few things that must be right before the AC system can run the fans, so I ask....that lets me know some things....

Yes the radiator fans works
Not a good enough answer by itself.

I need to know if both radiator fans start running when you turn on the AC.
Also as I previously explained my ac works perfect when ac compressor relay jumped;
Did you swap that clutch relay with another identical relay?

Re: 2002 civic ac compressor clutch not engaging.

I fixed my A/C clutch not engaging by removing a shim and a good cleaning of coil and clutch surfaces. Over time the clearance grew so that it would not engage the magnetic coil.

I have the same problem, did you guys find a solution??

I can’t figure out why my A/C does not respond, as soon as you start the car, it starts blowing hot air. I cannot turn it off, A/C controls do not respond.

Compressor only runs if you connected directly from the relay.
Relays are working fine.
Blower motor runs fine.
All fuses are fine.
Resistor is working (3 times replaced).
A/C control ***** replaced, and still doing the same.
A/C climate control/recirculation/defog replaced, and still doing the same.
A/C diagnostic DTC indicates a problem in the blower motor circuit (LED flashes 12 times).
I did what I found at http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/hon...lay-bench-test, and other test included in this web page, nothing wrong!
Fans do not turn on unless I connect the compressor clutch directly.

Do you have any other suggestions on what else I could do? Thank you for all your help!

Re: 2002 civic ac compressor clutch not engaging.

You need to check the blower motor circuit for: short in the system, bad connections at the terminals or bad terminals, bad fuses, bad relay, poor ground, bad fan motor, bad fan switch...

Re: 2002 civic ac compressor clutch not engaging.

On the US version the loss-of-charge switch on the compressor is routed back thru the ECU. So the ECU thinks there is low refrigerant. If there is a full charge it could be in the wiring. There is one plug in that circuit, located on the fan shroud down by the compressor. I'd open it up, clean it with no-ox and see if that helps.
Note you may have to remove the bolts in the front & rear motor mounts and rock the engine back to get your hand in there.
With all that said, I have never seen a Honda connector fail. But since you've done everything else, you might look there.

The device mounted on the compressor is actually a thermal protector, not a pressure switch, but yes it can stop the system from working.
The pressure switch is on the receiver-drier (7th gen).

Re: 2002 civic ac compressor clutch not engaging.

I want to thank all of you for your advise. I took my car with a friend who recommended that I replace the resistor one more time.

I bought Import Direct brand instead of Duralast brand (3 times replaced it), I still can't believe but this was the solution to my problem. How come? I really don't want to know.

Thank you for your time!

Duralast should be renamed to MightLast. I avoid that brand.

I'm having a similar problem with my Civic where the compressor is not kicking in. Could you explain how you jump the relay? There are four probes on this relay, assuming we are talking about the same thing. thanks.

Re: 2002 civic ac compressor clutch not engaging.

You would only jumper in the socket you pulled the relay from, and you ONLY jump the two wide terminals (labeled 30 and 87 on the relay shell in your picture).
This is done to power up the field coil for the compressor clutch for testing purposes.

If you jump the narrow terminals in the socket (85-86) you're gonna do some expensive damage.
