I have a 2003 ES1. I decided to upgrade the radio myself using a metra adapter and butt connectors. It worked fine for the first month untill one day it started randomly turning off while driving down the road. I changed my accesory fuse, re wired the hareness, grounded the radio where the cigarette lighter grounds, even got a new battery but it still cuts off. Any ideas on how to fix this? I cant figure out whats going on.

This is assuming it's just a head unit and no external amp -
One of a few things. Bad power wire connection, bad ground wire connection, speaker wire short or bad unit.

easy test: pull your harness and receiver, go under the hood, red (alternate) and yellow (constant) to positive battery post, black (ground) to negative battery post, keep the + and - speaker wires, illumination, power ant., and remote wires away. If it turns on you've got a wiring problem sparky, if it doesn't, either a break in the harness, fuses (on the receiver or the radio fuse in the fusebox) or the receiver is dead. may want to learn how to solder instead holmes.

Does it cut off when you go over any significant bump in the road or just randomly?

could I inquire what significance that would have? if its a break in a power or ground which is grounding out, it was covered in the last post, unless you're going to tell him where in the wire the problem is over the internet, (which would be impressive) what help was your post?

What I meant about it cutting off over a bump is a bad ground. I had a very similar problem. So if it does cut out when you go over a bump then the ground could be a bad connection. Putting a ground on a cigarette lighter isn't the best idea because if you of have a lose ground connection from it you therefore would have a bad ground for your radio. If you insist on using the lighter for a ground then a good way to test it would be to operate the lighter itself to see if the cigarette lighter would be a good ground. If the head unit connections are all good then the head unit is bad. Don't use a test light (if you are using that). I would recommend using an actual volt tester.

you could crack open the receiver check all the solder with a richter scale and DMM. sigh.
