Very obvious miss. No CEL. Runs fine on the highway.
How do I check coil packs?
If I buy new coils what brands are good and what should I avoid?
carparts.com has a four pack of coils for just under $100. Okay or avoid?


Been all over this site for 3 days, must have bookmarked a million pages.
This is better than new tools and a shop.

Does the CEL even work, or is it burned out?

Check for codes first. If there is really a miss, there will be misfire code related to it. It can't tell you WHY, but it can tell you which one to be concentrating on.



Remove wiring cover from the valve cover. Unbolt the coil but leave the wiring connected.... Run the engine, lift the coil up until you notice a new misfire (if checking a good cylinder), at that point you should be able to hear the snap of the spark down in the tube.
Repeat for all 4.
When you get to the one that makes no difference in how it runs (or the LEAST amount of difference), that's the dead hole.



There are many more possible causes for a misfire than spark plugs and coils.
Test, don't guess.
