Oooh.......I dunno....
I really don't recall having to do one on an older Hybrid, but I've been able to figure out a way to do them on almost all the other cars without discharging the freon.
I usually have to unbolt the compressor to move it around, maybe move other things to make room..
Plus I have a whole bunch of tools to choose from.
The manual doesn't specifically say you don't have to, but they expect it to be removed from the car to replace it.
Time under warranty would have been just under 3 hours to replace the field coil. Go figure.
